Google's AI calls businesses for customers: what Canadian owners should know

By , founder, U.S. Air Force veteranPublished

The short answer

In the United States, yes: since July 2025 Google Search can phone local businesses for a searcher, ask about price and availability, and send back a summary. Google has not announced it for Canada. Canadian businesses should still get ready, because customers already ask AI assistants which business to choose, and the fixes help with ordinary callers today.

Launch League's take

The one-call shortlist

When an AI makes the calls, the customer never phones you at all. They read a shortlist built from whoever answered. Your phone is no longer just a phone; it is your place on that list, and an unanswered ring is a quiet way to be left off it.

What is Google's AI actually doing?

Google started testing this in early 2025 and announced it for all Search users in the United States on July 16, 2025. A searcher looking for, say, a pet groomer can choose "Have AI check pricing". They answer a few questions about what they need, and Google's AI phones nearby businesses, asks about price and availability, and sends the answers back by text or email.

Google has also launched a version for shopping, called Let Google Call, that phones stores to ask whether something is in stock and at what price. And for years Google has used automated calls to confirm business details like opening hours.

What does the call sound like?

Google says its calls identify themselves as coming from Google and say why they are calling. Expect a short, polite voice asking the questions a customer would: do you do this service, roughly what does it cost, and when is your next opening.

That is the whole test. Can whoever answers say, in one short call, what you do, how pricing works and when you can fit someone in?

Can a business opt out?

Yes, two ways. You can say so on the call, or, if your Business Profile is verified, turn off Google automated calls under Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings. Google notes it may still make occasional manual calls.

Opting out is a business decision, not a moral one. If most of your work comes from a few long-term accounts, it may make sense. If you live on new customers finding you through search, opting out mostly means the AI moves on to the next business.

Is it happening in Canada?

Not as of October 2026. Every Google page that names a country for these calls says the United States, and Canadian tech press has reported that the feature has not come to Canada. Google has not announced a Canadian date.

What is already here is the habit behind it. People ask AI assistants which business to call, and the assistant can only recommend what it can find and understand about you: correct hours, clear services, a phone that gets answered.

Does answering these calls help my Google ranking?

Google has not said so, and anyone promising it is guessing. The honest case for answering well is simpler: the customer reads a summary of the businesses that answered. If you are not in it, you did not lose a ranking, you lost a customer you will never hear about.

What should an owner do this week?

Three things, in this order.

  • Call your own business at lunch and after hours. If it rings out, that is the first fix.
  • Write down, in two sentences, how your pricing works and when your next opening usually is. Make sure whoever answers knows it.
  • Check your Google Business Profile: hours, holiday hours, phone, services and booking link.

Questions

Quick answers

Is the AI caller a scam?
A real Google call says it is from Google and why it is calling. Google says it will never ask for payment, card numbers or passwords. Anyone who does is not Google: hang up.
Do I have to talk to a robot?
No. You can tell it you don't take these calls, or turn them off in your Business Profile settings. You simply won't appear in the answers that customer receives.
Can ChatGPT call my business too?
Not as far as OpenAI's own documentation shows. Its agents work through websites. That makes a clear, accurate website just as important as a clear answer on the phone.
What if I give a price and the job turns out bigger?
Give a range and what changes it, the same as you would to a person. "Most oil changes are in this range; it depends on the vehicle" is a complete, honest answer.
