Questions
Apprenticeship funding, answered
- What grants are available for apprentices in Ontario?
- On its funding page for skilled trades apprentices, the Government of Canada lists the Red Seal Completion Bonus ($5,000 for journeypersons certified in a Red Seal trade on or after April 1, 2025) and the Canada Apprentice Loan (up to $4,000 in interest-free loans). It also lists Employment Insurance while you attend technical training and tax deductions and credits. Provinces run their own supports, so check with your provincial apprenticeship office too.
- What is the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant, and can I still get it?
- You may have seen the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant and the Apprenticeship Completion Grant. They are not listed on the Government of Canada's current funding page for skilled trades apprentices, which lists the Red Seal Completion Bonus and the Canada Apprentice Loan instead. Confirm on Canada.ca or with your provincial office before you count on either.
- Is there money for employers who hire apprentices?
- The Government of Canada lists the Apprenticeship Service, with up to $10,000 in support for employers hiring new first-year apprentices, and says the Build Canada Apprenticeship Service is launching later this fall, planned to offer incentives of up to $10,000 for hiring first-year apprentices in eligible Red Seal trades. Check the official page for the current status.
- Are apprenticeship grants taxable?
- We have not read the tax treatment of these programs, so we will not guess. The Government of Canada lists tax deductions and credits for apprentices, including the tradespersons' tools deduction, the tuition tax credit, the education amount and the textbook amount. Ask the Canada Revenue Agency or an accountant about your situation.
- Can Launch League help me apply?
- Yes, for free. Nick can help you check eligibility, get your documents ready and walk through the official application with you. You enter your own details on the government site and we do not collect or store them. We cannot approve an application or guarantee a result.
Tip Programs and dates change. Check the official page before you act.
