The work

What this job actually is

  • Managing a team that sells, or managing the biggest customers yourself: setting targets, helping the team win deals, forecasting what will close and reporting to senior leaders.
  • Job Bank's group is corporate sales managers. It reports one wage and one outlook for the group, not for each kind of selling, and a key accounts manager is one of the titles in it.
  • Job Bank says a university degree or college diploma in business or a related field with a specialisation in sales is typically required, along with several years of experience as a sales representative or in a related occupation.
  • Job Bank says this occupation is not regulated in Canada, so no licence is compulsory.
  • Job Bank's Ontario outlook is Very limited, with employment decline expected to lead to the loss of some positions and a moderate number of openings from retirements.
  • The manager is usually a former salesperson who has proved they can sell. The job is different: your own sales matter less than whether your team's do.

A Tuesday

What a normal day looks like

Not a good day or a bad one. The ordinary version, which is what you would actually be living.

  1. 8:00 — Review the pipeline report. Three deals you expected this month have slipped.
  2. 9:00 — Team meeting: targets, wins, and a salesperson who has had a bad month.
  3. 10:30 — Join a sales call to help close a large customer.
  4. 12:00 — Lunch with a client who has a complaint about delivery.
  5. 13:30 — Meet marketing and operations to argue about what the team can promise.
  6. 15:00 — Coach a newer salesperson on handling a no.
  7. 16:00 — Prepare the forecast for senior leaders. You have to say a number out loud.
  8. 17:30 — Answer the emails from the customer who writes at the end of the day.
  9. 19:00 — A client dinner or an event that is part of the work.

Honestly

Who loves this, and who should not do it

The second list is the useful one. Nearly every careers page leaves it out, which is why nearly every careers page reads like an advert.

You may like this if
  • You like working with people and being measured by results you can see.
  • You enjoy coaching others and watching them get better at something hard.
  • You started in sales and found you were good at it and curious about how a team is run.
  • You can handle a number that resets every month or quarter.
  • You are comfortable building relationships with customers over years.
You may hate this if
  • You need job security. Job Bank rates the outlook for corporate sales managers Very limited, with some positions expected to be lost.
  • You dislike pressure from a number. The target is the target, and it follows you home.
  • You dislike telling people that they are not hitting theirs. Managing means hard conversations and sometimes letting people go.
  • You do not like entertaining or evening and weekend work. Client events can be part of the job.
  • You want to skip the beginning. Job Bank says several years of sales experience are typically required first.

The route in

How you actually get there in Ontario

  1. Study business with some sales focus

Job Bank says a university degree or college diploma in business or a related field with a specialisation in sales is typically required. Search ontariocolleges.ca and ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca for business and sales programmes, and look for co-op.
  2. Sell first

Job Bank says several years of experience as a sales representative or in a related occupation are usually required. Start in a sales or customer-facing job, learn the product and keep a record of what you sold.
  3. Show you can help others sell

Train new hires, run a small territory or lead a project. Managers are usually promoted from people who already help their colleagues perform.
  4. Move into a team lead or manager role

No licence is needed. Ask your own sales manager what they would look for in a successor, and ask what the company's route up looks like.

The outlook for the next three years

Job Bank publishes a three-year outlook for every job in every province. It is the closest thing to an honest forecast, and it moves, so read it as a weather report rather than a verdict.

Ontario, 2025-2027

Very limited1 out of 5 stars

  • Employment decline will lead to the loss of some positions.
  • A moderate number of positions will become available due to retirements.
  • There are several unemployed workers with recent experience in this occupation.

What that rating means: how many openings Job Bank expects in Ontario for this kind of work against how many people are likely to be looking — not whether it is a good job. A “limited” rating means more competition for each opening; it does not close the door, and it can change before you are ready to walk through it.

Before you leave school

Things you can do now

  • Sell something real, such as tickets, a fundraiser product or items at a school sale, and track how many you sold and why.
  • Take business, marketing and communications courses, and join a club where you have to persuade others.
  • Get a part-time job where you talk to customers, and notice which colleagues sell the most and what they do.
  • Ask a salesperson to tell you what a bad month feels like.

Test it

Do this before you decide anything

Reading about a job tells you almost nothing. This is designed to be done alone, this week, for free.

Make a sales pitch to three real people and keep score

About 60 minutes
  1. Pick something real you could sell or promote, such as a school fundraiser item or a service you could offer, with an adult's agreement if money is involved.
  2. Write a short pitch of three sentences covering who it is for, what it does for them and what you want them to do.
  3. Give it to three people, one at a time, and write down their questions and objections without arguing.
  4. Change the pitch based on what you heard, and write what it taught you about what people need to hear.

What it tells you. If you enjoyed hearing the objections and improving the pitch, you have the curiosity that makes a good salesperson and a better coach. If asking people for a decision made you want to stop, you will know early that a job measured by exactly that will be hard for you.

Questions for somebody who does this job

Most people say yes to a teenager who asks good questions. These are the ones that get real answers rather than encouragement.

  1. “How long did you sell before you managed a team?”
  2. “What is the hardest conversation you have with your team?”
  3. “How do you handle a quarter when the number does not come?”
  4. “What makes someone a good salesperson, and can it be taught?”
  5. “How much of your work is selling, and how much is managing?”
  6. “What would you tell someone who wants to start in sales?”

Could you own one of these?

The part other career sites never mention

Job Bank reports a low share of self-employment in this group, so most sales managers work for an employer. People with sales skill often start their own business, but that is selling your own product or service, and the business owner page covers that honestly.
