Matching tool

Which CAF jobs point toward the career you want?

We cover 78 CAF occupations (51 non-commissioned member, 27 officer) and the civilian careers they link to. Links come in three strengths, and the tool never mixes them.

How to read a match

Three kinds of link, and what each does not mean

Recognized

Skilled Trades Ontario lists the military trade against an Ontario trade, with a streamlined route to certification for members who hold the qualification level it names. This is the only kind that is a route to a credential, and even then you still have to apply and be assessed.

Listed by the CAF

The CAF's own occupation page names the civilian job as related. It is a signpost to similar work. It is not a credit, a licence or an exemption from any civilian exam.

Our reading

Nobody official states it. It is our reading of what the occupation page says the job trains, shown with that text so you can judge it. Treat it as a question for a recruiter.

Official facts

Who can join, and what does it pay?

Copied closely from forces.ca and canada.ca, with the page each came from. The CAF changes these, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

Eligibility

  • Regular Force: the how-to-join page states a minimum age of 17 (with an asterisk pointing to the full Qualifications for Enrolment). The same page shows 16 with an asterisk in one other block, so confirm the age with a recruiter. The maximum age is stated as 60 less the minimum years of service required for the chosen career. forces.ca: Joining the Canadian Armed Forces
  • An applicant who is under 18 on the day of enrolment needs the consent of a custodial parent or legal guardian. forces.ca: Joining the Canadian Armed Forces
  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Permanent residents must show three years of physical presence in Canada. forces.ca: Joining the Canadian Armed Forces
  • Non-commissioned members: completed Grade 10, or 24 credits of Secondary IV in Quebec. Individual occupations can ask for more (see each occupation's minEducation). forces.ca: Joining the Canadian Armed Forces
  • Officers: completed Grade 12 or Secondary V in Quebec and a Bachelor's degree completed or in progress. The page says applicants who do not meet this may be eligible for a Paid Education program. forces.ca: Joining the Canadian Armed Forces
  • Reserve Force: Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 16 years old, and at least Grade 10 (Secondary 4 in Quebec). forces.ca: Reserve Force
  • Reservists typically serve about one night a week and occasional weekends, close to home. Air Force reservists typically work 15 days per month and not usually on weekends and weeknights. Reserve jobs are available by location. forces.ca: Reserve Force

Pay

  • Regular Force, Private, Aviator or Sailor 2nd Class or 3rd Class: the table titled 'Basic monthly pay and annual pay increments 1 and 2, effective April 1, 2025' shows $4,337, $4,987 and $5,994.
